Who Benefits from Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

If you've never heard of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), you're certainly not alone.

Many people stumble across it while looking for relief from swelling, or because a friend has recommended it. Others arrive at my treatment room wondering, "Is this something that could actually help me?"

The short answer is... possibly!

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, rhythmic form of massage designed to encourage the natural movement of lymph fluid around the body. Your lymphatic system plays an important role in supporting your immune system and helping to remove waste products and excess fluid from your tissues.

Unlike a deep tissue massage, MLD uses light, precise movements. It's incredibly relaxing and, although gentle, can have a noticeable effect for the right person.

Who might benefit from Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

People experiencing swelling

One of the most common reasons people seek MLD is because they're dealing with swelling or bloating.

This could be after an injury, following surgery, during recovery from illness, or simply because they're noticing persistent puffiness in certain areas of the body.

By encouraging the movement of lymph fluid, MLD may help reduce fluid build-up and leave you feeling more comfortable.

After surgery

MLD is often recommended as part of recovery following certain surgical procedures.

When appropriate—and with your surgeon's guidance—it may help support the body's natural healing process by encouraging healthy fluid movement and reducing feelings of tightness or heaviness.

If you've recently had surgery, it's always important to check that you're ready for treatment before booking. Sometimes people look for MLD post surgery, possibly cosmetic, and want to book in quite soon afterwards. I am not trained in that specifically, and I would recommend that you look up someone who is trained in Vodder MLD as that is what they practice in hospitals.

I have had clients book in with me post cosmetic surgery and I have had to ask us to delay due to surgical tape still being in place.

If you have lymphoedema

For people living with lymphoedema, Manual Lymphatic Drainage can form part of a wider management plan alongside compression garments, exercise and good skin care.

Every person is different, so treatment should always be tailored to your individual needs.

Tired, heavy legs

Do your legs ever feel heavy after standing all day or spending hours sitting at a desk?

Many clients describe a feeling of lightness after treatment, particularly if they've been struggling with mild fluid retention or simply feeling sluggish.

Facial puffiness

MLD isn't just for the body.

Gentle lymphatic techniques can also be used on the face to reduce puffiness, particularly around the eyes and jawline. Many people love the refreshed, brighter appearance that can follow a facial lymphatic treatment.

I love practicing this on myself!

Relaxation and wellbeing

Although MLD has specific clinical applications, one of its loveliest side effects is how deeply relaxing it feels.

Life is busy.

We're often rushing from one thing to the next without giving our nervous system a chance to slow down.

Many clients leave saying they feel lighter, calmer and more balanced—even if they originally booked because of swelling rather than stress. I thought that reflexlology was the ultimate switch off for the brain until I trained in MLD. Wow. When I was training I was genuinely out for the count.

Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage right for everyone?

Not always.

There are some situations where MLD isn't appropriate, including certain medical conditions or active infections. That's why every appointment begins with a thorough consultation so we can make sure the treatment is safe and suitable for you.

Your wellbeing always comes first.

What can you expect from your appointment?

If you're imagining a firm sports massage, think again!

MLD is gentle, slow and incredibly calming. Using light, rhythmic movements, I work with your body's lymphatic pathways to encourage natural drainage.

Many people are surprised by how relaxing the treatment feels and often leave feeling deeply rested.
