Ok so… what does massage do? Why bother? Is it worth it?
Massage has an impressive range of health benefits from helping to release endorphins (the bodys natural pain killer) into the brain and nervous system, release muscular tension, encouraging mobility, the flow of nutrients and oxygen to our muscles throughout the body. Sounding good so far?
Massage deals not just with body, or mind, or emotions – it covers all 3. Massage wakes up the receptors under your skin that have effectively been ‘cut off’ by patterns of tension.
What will happen when I visit a Massage Practitioner? How will they know how to help me?
I will ask you to fill in a consultation form and from there we go to the treatment room where I continue the conversation and discuss the information you have given to me. As your Practitioner I want to know what you do with your body.
- Do you carry a bag and how big is it?
- I notice how you walk, your general posture
- I ask about your daily water intake
- What exercise do you do? (funnily enough walking, ironing, gardening, shopping, and looking after children do count in this category!)
- I look at your face and watch for expressions whilst talking about your back, or your neck
In short, I listen to what you need as a whole person and not just one little bit of you that is giving you trouble.
When I get tight bits in my muscles or feel stiffness in my shoulders and back, what is it?
One word describes this well. Fuzz. Yup you read that right. Fuzz. Everyone and I really do mean everyone, makes fuzz whilst they sleep. In the morning when you get up and feel like you need a good stretch it’s because over night fuzz has developed under your muscles. Every cat in the world wakes up and has a stretch, we should too!
The fuzz looks like candy floss and if you don’t stretch out (maybe do some arms circles and wiggle your hips side to side if you can ) or maybe you restrict your movement because something hurts, the candy floss goes hard and thats when you get ‘jumpy’ bits under your skin that feel like marbles, particularly in the shoulder region.
Simple lesson here folks, get rid of the fuzz so its doesn’t turn into hard candy floss. My job is break down the candy floss.
The massage lasts as long as you want it to – it’s all about you, and what you want or feel you need.
- Half an hour is fabulous if your appointment is during a lunch break;
- An hour is wonderful if you come after work;
- 2 hours will see you right if you’ve just taken part in a long run, or been ski-ing or snowboarding;
- As a destress session or a treat if you’ve just handed in your Thesis or finished exams – have a 2 hour session.
It is entirely up to you and what your needs are. If you haven’t given yourself a present in a long time an hour would be fantastic so that a full body massage can be experienced.
This depends on you as in individual. It depends on how much muscle movement I did and how many toxins (fuzz) have been broken down to be eliminated by the body.
Sometimes you may go through what is known technically as a ‘healing crisis’ which sounds far worse than it actually is! All it means is you may experience a slight headache, or feel really sleepy very quickly, or seem ‘a bit out of it’. As I mentioned before though it is very specific and can be related to how stressed you maywas have been when you first came in, and the amount of physical and emotional release you experience during the massage.
All clients will be advised to increase their intake of water for in the next 24 hours and even if you do get a headache or any of the other symptoms, I guarantee you’ll feel fantastic afterwards.
For me, the best thing about giving a great massage is when you sit up from the couch and you look completely different! Skin looks smoother and plumper, your aura is different, and you will be smiling! It’s an amazing thing to do for someone and I feel very honoured to look after my clients.
