Deep Tissue Massage is a form of massage that focuses on releasing the deeper myofascial restrictions of the deeper muscles, tendons and ligaments of the body. Also sometimes referred to as mysofascial release, it is used by many massage therapists, physical therapists and osteopaths.
Deep Tisse Massage is a specific massage , which employs techniques to work below the superfiscial connective tissue with teh intent of breaking up old structural patterns and allowing the free flow of nutrients and oxygen to the blood. It also requires the therapist to apply a considerabel amount of pressure which in some cases may cause some discomfort to the client: however, the therapist will always work within the comfort zone of the client.
The Deep Tissue massage therapist uses movements to release chronic muscle tension through slow and deep strokes, with more direct pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles. the therapist will detect stiff, knotted or painful areas aby determining the quality and texture of the deeper layers of musculature, and slowly working into the deep layers of msucle tissue. Specific hand positions and strokes are then used to respond to various tissue qualities and muscle attachments. Techniques employing breath and movement are also used for releasing muscular tightness.
Deep Tissue massage also helps to free trapped nerves, oxygenate poorly circulated areas and allows the spine and joints to relax into alignment – it utilises gradual pressure to access the deeper layers of the body and during the course of the deep tissue massage the therapist will be taught how tot use their body to achieve these actions.
Going deeper does not mean applying strength or force. When a therapist tries to force a muscle or uses brute strength, a muscle usually responds with more resistance. The key to going deep is actually relaxing – both for the therapist and the client.
